The Dominican Larimar was first found in the mountains of the Barahona province in 1916 by the priest Miguel Domingo Fuertes Loren, but then this find was not widespread, and in 1974, this blue stone of unusual beauty was again discovered by the local jeweler Miguel Mendes. As a result of laboratory studies, the examination confirmed that it was not turquoise, but a new stone with harder properties and the stone was given the name blue pectolite, and the jeweler, as the discoverer of the stone, came up with the name “larimar”, which consists of two parts : “Larie” is named his daughter Larisa, and “mar” is Spanish for the sea.

The stone is of volcanic origin and used manual method  to mine larimar.
