The first liquors appeared in the XI century and were made exclusively for medicinal purposes from herbs and were called potions and elixirs. They were produced by monks.
The reason for the appearance of fruit liquors in the XVII century was the Pomeranian bitter orange, which grew on the Antilles in the Caribbean sea. It was not possible to deliver it fresh to Europe, and then they came up with the idea of soaking the fermented oranges in alcohol, purifying the infusion and adding sugar to reduce the bitterness in the taste.
In the XIX century, the liquor world experienced a real boom and a huge variety of flavors appeared. Currently, there are fruit, cream, coffee, herbal and honey liqueurs.
